What is drifting?
By Erick Mahle
Drifting is the new motorsport culture. Although oversteering has been around since the dawn of motorsports, the drifting we recognize as a motorsport today did not start until the 80s, in Japan. In 2003, it arrived in the California shores.
Those teenagers who grew hooked on skateboarding and other sports that were belittled by elders now found this new motorsport with the same stick-it-to-the-man attitude without sustaining heavy injuries and broken bones. Its simply a new form of driving devised by minds thinking far outside the box.
Today, drifting has expanded throughout the entire country. With more events being hosted every day and a fast growing community of drifters, drifting has already inspired Hollywood to shoot a sequel to the popular movie franchise "The Fast and The Furious", devoted to the drifting scene.
“There’s nothing more fun than this is, I just gave a ride to a guy that drag races, one of the best in the country, and he’s been turned now. Anybody that tries it will get instantly hooked on it. It’s so extreme… It’s the most fun you can have with your pants on.” – Harri Tervola, Ter-Tech Inc.
